It's my Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy birthday today. To celebrate, we went to the zoo with Zoe, Billy, Amanda, Caden and Miles.
It was a beautiful bright sunny day, which of course in January means it was *freezing* cold! No complaints from me though.
The home ed rate for Whipsnade is excellent - £5.50 per child in low season, and I was free as the 'teacher'. We'll visit again in the spring or summer (before the school holidays) so we can see the bird show and the sea lion show.
Today we saw the bears, penguins, cheetahs, pygmy hippos, lions, zebras, meercats, various species of deer, camels, bison and the creatures in the Discovery Centre. The kids had a session in Hullabazoo (indoor play area) and in the excellent playground.
We were exceptionally lucky to see a 3 week old pygmy hippo calf. He was tiny! The zookeeper told us male calves are very rare in captivity. No one knows exactly why this is the case.
It was so nice to be back at the zoo, I've really missed popping up there whenever we wanted.
